Anita Anand: Canada’s New Indian-Origin Foreign Minister



 

    Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has appointed Anita Anand as the country’s new Foreign Minister in a major cabinet reshuffle. She replaces Melanie Joly, who is now the Minister of Industry. 
 

Who is Anita Anand?

    First Hindu in Canada’s Cabinet: Anand made history in 2019 as the first Hindu to serve in Canada’s federal Cabinet. She took her oath of office with her hand on the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text. 

    Political Experience: A senior member of the Liberal Party, Anand has held key roles, including Defence Minister,Public Services Minister, and Treasury Board President. 

    Education & Career: Born in Canada to Indian immigrant parents (her mother from Punjab, father from Tamil Nadu), she studied at Oxford University and later earned law degrees in Canada. Before politics, she worked as a lawyer and professor. 

 

What’s Changing in Canada’s Government?

    New Cabinet: The reshuffle includes 28 ministers, with half being women, showing a focus on diversity. 

    Fresh Leadership: PM Carney says the new team will focus on improving Canada-U.S. relations and delivering "the change Canadians want."

Personal Life

    Anand is married to lawyer John Knowlton and lives in Oakville with their four children. Known for her disciplined leadership, she is now set to play a key role in Canada’s global diplomacy.
