NASA Delays Axiom-4 Launch with Indian Astronaut Aboard

NASA has postponed the highly anticipated launch

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA has postponed the highly anticipated launch of the private Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station (ISS), originally scheduled for Sunday, June 22, 2025. A new launch date will be announced in the coming days.

The delay impacts the four-person international crew, which includes pioneering Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla. Shukla, serving as pilot, is set to become the first Indian astronaut to fly on a NASA mission. The crew is commanded by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, with mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland and Tibor Kapu of Hungary.

Reason for the Stand Down:

The decision stems from NASA's need for additional time to evaluate ISS operations following recent repair work. Specifically, the agency is assessing the aft (rear) segment of the station's critical Russian-built Zvezda service module.

"Because of the space station’s interconnected and interdependent systems, NASA wants to ensure the station is ready for additional crew members, and the agency is taking the time necessary to review data," Axiom Space stated, relaying NASA's position.

NASA and Axiom Space are collaborating to determine the next viable launch opportunity. The Ax-4 crew, seen on launch pad video monitors alongside the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at Launch Complex 39-A during the previous countdown, will await the new target date. The mission remains a significant milestone, particularly for India's space ambitions with Shubhanshu Shukla's flight.
