Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2.0 Towards Housing for All

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2.0 (PMAY 2.0) is the revamped and extended version

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana 2.0 (PMAY 2.0) is the revamped and extended version of the original housing scheme launched in 2015. With the ambitious goal of achieving "Housing for All", PMAY 2.0 aims to bridge the gap between urban and rural housing needs in India. The scheme is designed to provide affordable housing to the economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG) by offering government-backed subsidies and support for the construction, purchase, or enhancement of homes.

Under PMAY 2.0, the government has placed a strong emphasis on infrastructure-led urban growth, aiming to construct over 3 crore new houses by 2026. The initiative continues to operate through two major components: PMAY-Urban (PMAY-U) for cities and PMAY-Gramin (PMAY-G) for villages. Key updates in PMAY 2.0 include faster disbursal of funds, improved eco-friendly construction standards, and stronger digital monitoring systems to ensure transparency and timely delivery.

One of the standout features of PMAY 2.0 is the Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS), which allows eligible beneficiaries to receive interest subsidies on home loans, significantly lowering the cost of homeownership. In urban areas, the focus has expanded to include rental housing for migrant workers and the use of public-private partnerships (PPP) for large-scale construction. Meanwhile, PMAY-G aims to complete pucca homes with basic amenities in rural India, thereby improving living standards and supporting local employment through housing-related activities.

With the rollout of PMAY 2.0, the government seeks not only to provide shelter but also to empower families, promote social inclusion, and stimulate economic growth in allied sectors like construction, steel, cement, and logistics. The initiative is a critical pillar in the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, aiming to uplift millions from poverty through secure, dignified living conditions.
