Mulder 367* SA Record, 33 Shy of Lara

Bulawayo, July 11, 2025 – South African captain Wiaan Mulder produced one of the greatest Test innings ever seen, smashing an unbeaten 367 before his team's declaration left him agonisingly 33 runs short of Brian Lara's all-time record 400*, as South Africa posted 625/5 against Zimbabwe on day two.

Mulder's Monumental Record Haul:

Highest SA Test Score: Surpassed Hashim Amla's 311* (vs England, 2012) to claim South Africa's highest individual Test score.

Highest Away Test Score: Broke Hanif Mohammad's 337 (WI, 1958) for the highest individual score in a Test match played away from home.

5th Highest Test Score Ever: Soared past legends Sanath Jayasuriya (340), Len Hutton (364), and Sir Garfield Sobers (365*) to sit 5th on the all-time list. Only Lara (400*, 375) and Matthew Hayden (380) remain ahead.

Second-Fastest Triple Century: Reached 300 in just 297 balls – the second-fastest triple century in Test history, behind only Virender Sehwag's 278-ball effort (vs SA, 2008).

Second South African Triple Centurion: Joined Hashim Amla as only the second Protea to score a Test triple century.

The Declaration Drama:
Resuming day two on his overnight 264, Mulder unleashed a breathtaking morning assault, adding 103 runs before Lunch. He looked utterly dominant and on course to challenge Lara's iconic 400. However, during the interval, with Mulder stranded on 367* (408 balls, 46 fours, 6 sixes), South Africa declared their innings closed at 625/5.

The decision, while strategically sound given the massive lead, denied Mulder the chance to etch his name alone at the very pinnacle of Test batting. His 367* stands as a colossal achievement, rewriting the South African record books and securing his place among Test cricket's batting giants, yet forever tinged with the "what if" of those final 33 runs.
