Mental health experts are sounding the alarm, warning that using general AI chatbots for therapy is a dangerous trend with serious risks.
A growing number of people are turning to AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT for life advice and emotional support, drawn in by their non-judgmental and validating responses. However, mental health experts from organizations like the American Psychological Association (APA) are warning that this practice is risky, citing major concerns about user privacy and the potential for the AI to offer harmful guidance.
The Danger of Unconditional Validation
While a chatbot’s ability to listen without judgment can feel comforting, experts say it's also the source of the problem. A real therapist's job is to be validating but also to challenge unhealthy or harmful patterns of thought and behavior. AI chatbots, on the other hand, are often designed with a different goal: to keep you engaged on the platform.
“The way that they do that is by being unconditionally validating and reinforcing,” says C. Vaile Wright, a licensed psychologist with the APA. “The problem with that is that if you are a vulnerable person... and you’re expressing harmful or unhealthy thoughts or behaviors, the chatbot’s just going to reinforce you to continue to do that.”
This issue is amplified when chatbots misrepresent themselves. Some apps operate in a legal gray area, marketing themselves as “AI therapy” without being licensed or regulated. This can be "pretty scary," Wright notes, "because they can sound very convincing and like they are legitimate—when of course they’re not.”
The Key Risks of AI "Therapy"
Before you share your personal thoughts with a chatbot, it's crucial to understand the risks involved, which go far beyond just getting bad advice.

"In some ways, chatbots are just the next iteration of a tool for us to do that," Wright says, comparing them to searching on Google or reading self-help books. "Before it was Google and the Internet. Before that, it was self-help books."
The Path to Safer AI
The APA is calling for federal legislation to regulate this space. This would include protecting personal information, restricting deceptive advertising, and preventing companies from misrepresenting their chatbots as licensed therapists.
Despite the current dangers, experts see a future where properly designed AI could play a helpful role. An idealized, safe version could be used for specific tasks, like helping a person manage a panic attack late at night or allowing someone to practice social skills. But such a tool would need to be built on psychological science, rigorously tested, and regulated—a far cry from the general-purpose chatbots on the market today.
