Monsoon Covers India 9 Days Early, Fastest Since 2020

Monsoon rains reached Delhi a day early

New Delhi, June 29, 2025 – The Southwest Monsoon blanketed the entire country on Sunday, achieving the fastest nationwide coverage since 2020—nine days ahead of schedule—the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced.

Monsoon rains reached Delhi a day early (June 29 vs. June 30) and swept through remaining regions of Rajasthan, Haryana, and West Uttar Pradesh, completing India’s coverage by June 29 instead of the typical July 8. IMD attributed the rapid advance to a strong low-pressure system over the Northwest Bay of Bengal, with an associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km. This system is predicted to move slowly across Odisha, West Bengal, and Jharkhand over the next two days.

Himachal Pradesh: An orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain) was issued for Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, Kullu, and Mandi.

Yellow alerts (light-moderate rain) cover Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, and Chamba.

Authorities warned of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas, urging preparedness.

The monsoon typically begins in Kerala around June 1 and covers India by July 8. While 2023 saw the earliest Kerala onset since 2009 (May 24), this year’s pace echoes 2020’s record coverage by June 26.

Early monsoon coverage can boost agriculture but heightens flood risks. IMD’s alerts aim to mitigate disasters in sensitive zones like Himachal Pradesh.
